When those providing a service say they’re getting just as much out of it as those receiving it, you know you’ve got a winning combination. That’s the secret of success for Catholic Charities of Buffalo’s Foster Grandparent Program, a program that pairs seniors and children in educational settings to provide extra one-on-one support in the classroom.

“The volunteers in the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) have reported that the children they serve are the reason why they wake up in the morning. They say that the program keeps them motivated and provides them with a sense of purpose,” said Jasmine Tandoi, FGP supervisor. “Through this program they not only help children with special and exceptional needs succeed academically, but they also remain physically active, mentally stimulated, and socially involved.”

Volunteers spend between 5 and 40 hours per week in the program under the supervision of a teacher or center director, and receive a small stipend to offset any cost they may acquire during service, including transportation and meal reimbursements.  The program also offers monthly training opportunities, and offers a flexible schedule for volunteers.

Karen T., a volunteer with the program, says being a Foster Grandparent keeps her motivated, her energy levels up, and engaged in her community.

“The benefit of volunteering is waking up every morning knowing that there are children waiting to see me,” Karen said. “I thank the Foster Grandparent Program for allowing me to make lasting relationships with new friends.”

Karen also noted the program was instrumental in helping her recover after a bypass surgery.

“My motivation for recovery was returning to my volunteer service,” she said.

And it’s not just Foster Grandparent volunteers and students who are reaping the rewards of this program – teachers who utilize the program in their classrooms are grateful for the extra hands – and extra support – the Foster Grandparents provide.

“Teachers on our annual assignment plans from 2023-2024 have shared that the program is vital, impactful and beneficial to students. They have shared that the children look forward to seeing their grandparent each day, and that it also gives teachers a chance to continue with lessons while the volunteer helps a student who needs a little more support and guidance mastering the task at hand, “ Jasmine said. “The extra care and attention our Foster Grandparents provide really makes a difference not only in the classroom, but in the lives of these children.”
